Paleoindian period, about 12,000 to 10,000 years ago; Sudbury, Massachusetts; Material: Saugus red jasper; Length: 3.1 cm; Adams Tolman Collection, gift of Mrs. Adams Tolman (1990). Photograph by Jeff Boudreau.

Archaeologist Jeff Boudreau identified this artifact as part of a “preform” or an artifact in the process of being made. A partial “flute,” or long thin flake, had once been part of the artifact and identifies it as Paleoindian. The material comes from the north shore of Massachusetts near Saugus.
